Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is WiFi?
WiFi actually stands for Wireless Fidelity and it's the new term for describing wireless services and devices based on the world wide 802.11 standard for local area networks. Typically, WiFi is coupled with the term HotSpot.

What is a HotSpot?
A HotSpot is a geographic area or zone that is enabled with high-speed wireless Internet access. HotSpots are fast becoming expected amenities in airports, hotels, restaurants, and even in certain parts of municipalities such as in shopping districts and city parks. A WiFi HotSpot allows access to the Internet or corporate intranet at speeds up to 200 times faster than dial-up using either a laptop or handheld that is wirelessly-enabled with an 802.11 b or g card.

What do I need to access the Galleria WiFi HotSpot?

  • A WiFi compatible (IEEE 802.11 b or g) network card.
  • Many Apple and PC laptops are being shipped with installed 802.11 b or g compatible cards and web browsers.
  • Some handhelds from Compaq, Sony, Palm, are being shipped with installed 802.11 b or g compatible cards and web browsers.
  • How does the Galleria WiFi HotSpot work?
South Bay Galleria has installed a wireless access point in the Food Court. It creates the wireless links by transmitting a radio signal to the user's WiFi 802.11 b or g compatible wireless network card. With full connectivity to the Internet, a user can even access institutional networks to which they have affiliation and authorization.

How do I login to the Galleria WiFi HotSpot?
Turn on your computer, allow it to fully "boot", and launch your web browser. The portal web page containing the Terms of Use Statement will appear. An Accept button located near the top and bottom of the page will also appear. After reading the disclaimer and log on agreement, click either Accept button and you will have access to the Internet.

Do I need to download or install any special software to connect to the Galleria WiFi HotSpot?
The only software you need to install is the software driver for your WiFi 802.11 b or g compatible wireless network card and an Internet-ready web browser. The Galleria WiFi HotSpot requires no additional software.

I have an older operating system that requires manual entry of the SSID. What is the SSID for the SBG WiFi HotSpot?
Type in "South Bay Galleria" (no quotes) for the Galleria's WiFi HotSpot SSID.

Can I connect using a Macintosh computer?
Yes, Galleria WiFi supports Macintosh users. Macs with AirPort cards installed usually require little to no configuration. You will need to set your AirPort card to select the Galleria WiFi HotSpot network. See the AirPort card documentation for more specific instructions.
